  1/23   FFA Discovery Conference
Posted by South Region

The Discovery Conference is a wonderful opportunity for middle school FFA members. It is a great way to get young members excited about the FFA and introduce students to the opportunities that FFA has to offer. The 2020 Discovery Conference will be a ONE DAY event held on January 23, 2021 at the Georgia FFA/FCCLA Center in Covington.

Registration for this year’s conference will look different from previous conferences you may have attended. To keep social distancing and safety procedures in place, chapters will purchase a conference table that can be filled with no more than five students. Tables are available for a flat-rate fee, and chapters will receive the material for up to 5 students, regardless of how many students are registered. For example, if you purchase a table but only end up bringing 3 students, you will still receive the materials for five. Chapters can register for a maximum of three tables to start, and if space allows we will contact those on the waiting list. There are four registration options listed below that vary in price and add on of T-Shirts and FFA Manuals

Registration and payment for the conference need to be completed and postmarked by Thursday, January 8.  You will complete the online registration through the link provided in the corresponding e-mail and mail a printed copy of your invoice along with full payment to the Georgia FFA Association. No faxed or emailed registration information will be accepted. Registration is only complete upon the receipt of payment. If the conference has to be canceled because of COVID-19 or safety reasons, payments will be returned.

If you have any questions about the Discovery Conference, please don’t hesitate to contact me at the office (706) 552-4457. I look forward to seeing you and your students at the conference!

Proficiency Judging Opportunity

The quality of applications has increased over the past few years due to the judging process that the South Region has in place. Using Agriculture Teachers to judge the applications allows teachers to learn more about how to help students fill out their proficiencies. If your goal is to increase the quality of your proficiency applications from your chapter, then you don't want to miss the opportunity to serve as a judge. The link to sign up to serve to judge is below. Judging will take place on Wednesday, February 10th in Tifton. (Lunch provided!)

The Rise Above Conference is a wonderful opportunity for all high school students, not only introducing your freshman to FFA and the opportunities our organization provides while still challenging your upperclassmen to dive deeper into how they can impact their chapters and communities.

Because there is no overnight lodging, you will not have to submit student names and gender breakdowns. However, you will be asked to send in your number of students attending and t-shirt sizes two weeks before the conference so that we are able to communicate with the camps and t-shirt company to ensure that we have enough materials.  Students should plan to wear casual clothing for the conference. Additionally, masks will be required by all in attendance in order to participate in the 2021 Rise Above Conference. Tables will be socially distanced with only five students per table.  Students will need to fill out the new online medical form, which will be emailed to you after your registration has been submitted.

Registration and payment for the conference need to be completed and postmarked by Thursday, February 11, 2021.  You will complete the online registration through the link provided at the bottom of this email and mail a printed copy of your invoice along with full payment to the Georgia FFA Association. No faxed or emailed registration information will be accepted. Registration is only complete upon the receipt of payment. If the conference has to be canceled because of COVID-19 or safety reasons, payments will be returned.

If you have any questions about the Rise Above Conference please don’t hesitate to contact me at the office (706) 552-4457. I look forward to seeing you and your students at the conference!

ABAC - Chambliss Building

The South Region Floral Design CDE will be conducted in two rounds this year.

  1. The first round will include the Identification of Floral Goods (Junior and Senior) and the General Exam (Senior Only). These events will be conducted through Q-Bank. This event will serve as a qualifier for the second round. The top 10 students in each Area will move on to compete in the second round.

  2. The second round will include the Arrangement portion of the CDE. Juniors and Seniors will both design ONE arrangement. Only the top 10 Juniors and Seniors from the first round will compete in this portion of the CDE.

Registration

  • Teachers will register for the preliminary CDE through the GAAGED Website by Wednesday, 1/27 (3 weeks from today). Due to students not being able to carry their arrangements home this year, there will not be a materials fee for the final event.

Round 1 - ID and Exam

  • The first round will take place on Wednesday, February 3rd. The event will open in Q-Bank at 9:00 AM and close at 5:00 PM. Students will complete the Identification of Floral Goods (Junior and Senior) and the General Exam (Senior Only).

  • Teachers will receive an email on Tuesday, 2/2. Included in the email will be the Q-Bank log-in information and the identification lists for the CDE. Teachers will need to print copies for each of their students prior to beginning the CDE on Wednesday. These will be the same Identification lists that can be found in the CDE Guidelines on the GAAGED website (linked below).

  • Students MUST complete each portion of the CDE on their own without the assistance of their teacher or study resources. Teachers will be responsible for ensuring that their students compete with integrity.

  • Juniors - Junior Floral Design CDE Guidelines

    • Identification of Floral Goods - Pictures of twenty-five items from the Floral Design Hard Good and Materials and/or Floral Design Fresh Product (Foliage and Flower) lists will be displayed in Q-Bank for contestants to identify. Students will use the 3-digit numbers on their Identification sheets to input their answers in Q-bank.

    • Students will have 30 minutes to complete the event.

  • Seniors - Senior Floral Design CDE Guidelines

    • Identification of Floral Goods - Pictures of twenty-five items from the Floral Design Hard Good and Materials and/or Floral Design Fresh Product (Foliage and Flower) lists will be displayed in Q-Bank for contestants to identify. Students will use the 3-digit numbers on their Identification sheets to input their answers in Q-bank.

    • General Knowledge Exam - The general knowledge section will consist of twenty-five multiple-choice questions covering all aspects of the floral industry.

    • Students will have 1 hour to complete the event.

  • Every effort will be made to announce the top 10 junior and senior students from each Area moving on to Round 2 on Thursday, 2/4.

 Round 2 - Arrangement

  • The final round will take place on Thursday, March 4th at ABAC.

  • Area VI - Registration 10:00 AM

  • Area V - Registration at 2:00 PM

  • Students will be asked to make one floral design arrangement announced at the start of the event. Only materials provided to the participant from the Floral Design Hard Good and Materials and Floral Design Fresh Product Lists can be used in the arrangement. The contestant will have 30 minutes to complete the arrangement. These designs should reflect the scenario given.

  • Junior - Possible arrangements could include body/personal flowers, bud vase, or a 9 flower round arrangement.

  • Senior - Possible arrangements could include bridal or attendant bouquets (hand-tied, nosegay or presentation bouquets), body/personal flowers, or water-based or wet floral foam designs.

  • Each contestant will bring their own tools to the contest. Students will need the following items: a small broom and dustpan for cleaning after the event, floral scissors, ribbon shears, stem cutters, wire cutters, floral pliers, green floral tape, green waterproof tape, clear waterproof tape, floral wire, and/or floral adhesive (in dot, strip, or liquid form). Contestants will not be allowed to bring any material into the competition area that could be used to enhance the creativity of their design(s) that is not supplied to all participants; this includes, but is not limited to, floral ribbon, wired ribbon, decorative wire, bullion wire, and any floral accents.

  • Once students have completed their designs, they will leave them to be judged later in the afternoon. Students will have their pictures taken with their arrangements and the picture will be emailed to the Ag Teacher following the event.

Round 2 - COVID Protocols

  • Teachers are asked to take the temperatures of students prior to arriving at the event.

  • All students and advisors will wear a mask and maintain social distancing at all times.

  • Students and advisors should limit interaction with chapters from other travel groups.

  • Participants will not be allowed to swap or share tools (scissors, wire cutters, etc) with other participants. Students will also not be allowed to get extra supplies from a common supply table. All materials (except tools) will be provided for the student at their station.
